At TaxDome, we’re building the world’s #1 practice management platform for accounting firms. Since 2017, our fully remote team across 40+ countries has grown to serve 15,000+ firms and 6M+ of their clients worldwide.
TaxDome was voted the #1 practice management system in the CPA Practice Advisor Readers’ Choice Awards in both 2025 and 2026, earning nine additional awards selected by the accountants who use our platform. We’re also proud to have received Silver Stevie Awards for Employer of the Year in 2025 and 2026, reflecting our commitment to building a great place to work.
You’ll be part of a globally distributed team built on trust, ownership, and self-management.
We focus on outcomes over activity — prioritizing clear ownership, pragmatic decision-making, and accountability for results over rigid processes. Collaboration is central to how we operate: we communicate openly, involve the right people early, and continuously improve how we build products and teams together.
We’re looking for a Staff Performance Engineer to join our Platform Engineering organization (Technical Cluster) and help us build a systematic performance engineering practice that keeps TaxDome fast and predictable under its highest annual load. More than half of our annual traffic is generated during the US tax season, when the system operates under its highest load.
We already have the building blocks: observability, k6 load testing and a production-like performance environment. Your job is to connect them into one system — performance budgets → automated validation → CI signals → capacity model → team adoption.
You own the performance engineering framework, standards, tooling and readiness process across TaxDome. Product teams remain responsible for the performance of the systems they build; you give them the tools, signals and technical leadership to manage it effectively. This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports, and it is not a manual performance-testing role: your leverage should come primarily from automation, reusable tooling and engineering standards.
It’s a fully remote role, we are hiring across EMEA, primarily within CET ±2h.
Backend: Ruby 3.3, Rails 8.1, Puma, Sidekiq 8 (Pro), Shoryuken (SQS), AnyCable
Data: PostgreSQL 16 with read replicas and RDS Proxy, Redis 7, OpenSearch
Frontend: React 18, TypeScript, Vite
Infrastructure: AWS (EKS with Karpenter, RDS), GitLab CI
Observability: Datadog (APM, DBM, RUM), Grafana + VictoriaMetrics, stackprof, Yabeda
Load testing: k6, production-like performance environment
Own the performance engineering practice: framework, standards, tooling and the tax-season readiness process across TaxDome.
Define performance budgets for critical user flows and make them measurable.
Build automated performance validation for new features and regression testing that catches material degradations before production.
Build tooling and diagnostics that systematically surface bottlenecks across application, database and async workloads, and work with owning teams on remediation.
Turn budgets and test results into CI signals engineers trust — clear thresholds, clear reports, gates where they earn their place.
Build the capacity model for tax season and verify headroom before the peak, not during it.
Drive adoption: partner with engineering teams so performance risks are caught early and handled in the normal development flow.
Proven track record building performance-testing and regression tooling for a large, high-load production system with a monolithic or modular core and distributed services — and getting engineering teams to adopt it.
Deep command of load-testing methodology: workload modelling, baselining, regression detection, and reading results in noisy production-like conditions.
Strong software engineering skills and the ability to work effectively in a Ruby/Rails codebase. Deep Ruby expertise is not required if your performance engineering background comes from another stack.
Systems-level reasoning and ownership: you trace symptoms across application, database and async layers to their root causes, turn recurring failure modes into automated checks where appropriate, and drive outcomes across teams you don't manage.
Clear written English (B2+) for standards, runbooks and reports that engineers across time zones can act on.
AI-first way of working: you use AI tools in your daily engineering work as a matter of course, adapt based on the quality of what they produce, and design AI-assisted workflows where they pay off.
Performance work in a Rails-shaped architecture: Rails monolith, PostgreSQL, Sidekiq/Redis.
Datadog (APM, DBM, RUM) or a comparable observability platform.
Kubernetes/AWS capacity: EKS autoscaling, RDS replicas, connection pooling.
Frontend performance: page load, Core Web Vitals.
Coaching engineers so performance tests and fixes don’t route through you.
At TaxDome, we aim to create an environment where people can do their best work and grow alongside the company.
Competitive compensation, paid in USD, transparently shared before the first interview
Performance-based internal incentive plan
Fully remote work with flexible hours
30 paid days off annually, plus sick days as needed
Health & well-being support
Learning & development budget to support your professional growth

Upon successful completion of the interview process and acceptance of the offer to join, an employment verification check will be conducted as part of pre-boarding — confirming job titles and dates of engagement with 2 of your previous employers. This is a required step for all new joiners.
