At MyFitnessPal, we believe good health starts with what you eat. We provide tools, resources and support to enable users to reach their health goals.
We are looking for a Staff Data Systems Architect to join the MyFitnessPal Data Engineering team. Our users rely on MyFitnessPal to power their health and fitness journeys every day. As a member of our MyFitnessPal Engineering team, you’ll have the opportunity to positively impact those users with your expertise in the backend systems that drive the MyFitnessPal ecosystem. In addition to technical expertise, you’ll find that your teammates value collaboration, mentorship, and inclusive environments.
About the team:
MyFitnessPal encourages innovation and adoption of the latest technologies available to deliver an amazing experience for our members. Our diverse team of brilliant technologists builds and maintains native mobile applications, a web application, the world’s largest nutrition database, constantly evolving data science and AI/ML assets, the backend infrastructure and data platform required to support these applications and databases, as well as the business systems and data required to manage an awesome company. Technologies and languages we work with include: Airflow, Snowflake, dbt, Git Hub, PlanetScale, Elasticsearch, Scala, Python, SQL, Amplitude, Appsflyer, Kubernetes, Kafka, Docker, Okta and Claude Code. We care more about your general engineering skills and technical leadership than your knowledge of a specific language and or framework.
Own the end-to-end systems design of the MyFitnessPal product data stack
Develop, drive, and maintain the systems architecture roadmap for the product data stack
Serve as the primary point of contact in Data Platform for the consolidated data stack, coordinating contributions from Data Engineering, Business Intelligence, Product Analytics, and backend engineering teams
Define and enforce data movement and standardization discipline across the stack
Lead architecture review of new tool decisions, vetting vendors against the existing stack, surfacing duplication, and collaborating on proof-of-value evaluations
Contribute to the compliance architecture for user data, including PII tagging and a deletion/DSR policy by which every tool receiving user data is governed
Administer access and licensing across the data stack, maintaining a single view of spend and access
Document and evangelize architecture decisions, standards, and ownership models across the organization
8 - 12+ years in systems design, architecture, or engineering roles, including 3 - 5 years designing end-to-end data platform architecture at the architect / staff level
Experience architecting the integrations of a modern customer data stack — product analytics, experimentation, attribution, and marketing activation tools (e.g. Amplitude, Eppo, Harness, AppsFlyer, Braze)
Experience in Snowflake or similar cloud data platform, including performance tuning, cost optimization, and role-based access design
Experience leading vendor evaluations, tool consolidations, or platform migrations
Experience implementing data governance, security, and compliance frameworks, including PII handling and deletion/DSR workflows across multiple destinations
Demonstrated experience defining architecture standards adopted across a team or organization, and enforcing them through automation rather than manual review
Cost-conscious ownership of infrastructure and vendor spend, balancing performance and reliability against cost
Proven ability to drive architecture decisions across teams and organizations
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience deploying semantic layer and metrics layer best practices via dbt or similar tooling
Experience with data cataloging/governance tools (e.g. Secoda, Snowflake Horizon) and metadata stewardship programs
Experience in high velocity experimentation organizations, including exposure/assignment pipelines and experiment metric governance
Advanced SQL knowledge and experience
Experience working in consumer-facing subscription app environments, with an understanding of acquisition, retention, and engagement metrics
Experience making governed data safely available to AI assistants and agents — AI-ready data models, agent context, and guardrailed access patterns
Values you’ll model
Be Kind and Care — build with empathy; assume positive intent; support teammates and members.
Live Good Health — champion healthy habits and balance in how we work and what we ship.
Be Data-Inspired — ground decisions in research and data; measure what matters.
Champion Change — lean into ambiguity; iterate, learn, and improve continuously.
Leave it Better than You Found It — raise quality, clarify systems, and document as you go.
Make It Happen — bias to action; deliver impact with craft and accountability.
The reasonably estimated salary for this role at MyFitnessPal ranges from $160,000 - $220,000. Actual compensation is based on factors such as the candidate’s skills, qualifications, and experience.
