This is a fully remote role within the United States.
We’re looking for a product-minded Design Engineer to bridge the gap between design intent and the experience we ultimately ship. You’ll evolve Pit Viper, Turquoise Health’s design system and component library, while working directly in product code to improve the usability, consistency, accessibility, and polish of our applications.
Pit Viper includes visual foundations, layouts, CSS patterns, and pv-components built with Vue. Those components can also be distributed as native Web Components, allowing us to reuse the system in lighter-weight, server-driven parts of the product powered by Django templates.
You’ll help determine what the right interactions should be, implement them in production, and identify when an individual product improvement should become a reusable system capability.
Success in this role means being able to demonstrate outcomes such as:
A recurring product pattern that previously required one-off implementations is now supported by a flexible, well-documented pv-component
A critical workflow is materially easier to understand because its interaction, hierarchy, responsive behavior, and edge states have been refined in code
Vue and HTMX-powered product surfaces can use the same components without creating fragmented user experiences
Accessibility, visual consistency, and interaction issues are caught and resolved before release rather than during post-launch cleanup
Product engineers can ship high-quality experiences more quickly because our design system gives them stronger defaults
Design, build, test, document, and maintain reusable pv-components within our internal design system (PitViper)
Create thoughtful component APIs, composition patterns, variants, interaction states, and extension points that serve emerging product needs
Ensure components work naturally within Vue applications while remaining useful as native Web Components in HTML and other server-rendered product surfaces
Partner closely with product designers and engineers throughout the development process, from early exploration through production implementation
Work directly in application code to refine layouts, interactions, responsive behavior, typography, spacing, focus management, transitions, and feedback states
Last-mile design delivery: implementation of details that are often missed between a design file and production, including loading, empty, error, success, disabled, hover, and keyboard-navigation states
Review product surfaces for visual, behavioral, and accessibility inconsistencies, then fix them at the appropriate level: within the feature, shared application code, or Pit Viper
Improve the documentation, testing, release processes, and contribution practices that make Pit Viper easier for other teams to adopt
Strong experience building polished, production-quality web interfaces using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript or TypeScript
Experience building or contributing to a design system / component library
Strong visual and interaction-design judgment. You can recognize why an interface feels unfinished and translate that observation into a concrete implementation
The ability to move comfortably between design artifacts, component architecture, and application code
A practical understanding of responsive design
A product-oriented approach to engineering. You consider the user’s workflow and the underlying system rather than treating a design file as a literal specification
Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work through ambiguous interaction and implementation decisions with designers and engineers
Experience building or distributing native Web Components or custom elements. Production experience with VueJS
Experience with HTMX, Django, or other server-rendered application architectures
Familiarity with Storybook, component testing, visual-regression testing, synthetic testing, and automated accessibility checks
Experience with design tokens, theming, package versioning, and component-library release management
Experience building complex, data-dense enterprise software
A bias for prototyping interactions directly in code
Examples of shipped work that demonstrate both technical depth and a strong eye for product quality
Competitive pay with equity options
Stellar healthcare plan options, including Medical, Dental, and Vision, with FSA, DCFSA, and HSA options
Company-sponsored disability and life insurance
Unlimited PTO
401(k) with 4% matching
Fully remote work and flexible working hours
$750 work-from-home setup budget
Paid biannual in-person company summits
Quarterly $150 co-hanging stipend to meet with coworkers
Monthly $100 health and wellness benefit
Generous paid family leave
Annual $1,200 learning and development stipend
