Remote: CET +/- 1 hour (Europe, Africa, UK)
JOIN started with something founder Jim van den Berg kept seeing in his own athletes: even a perfect training plan falls apart the moment real life gets in the way - bad sleep, a rained-out ride, a spontaneous group spin. Jim's take: there are no bad workouts, just a bad combination of workouts.
So in 2020, drawing on Jim's background as a semi-pro racer and World Tour-level coach, he built an app that adjusts the plan around your life, instead of asking you to bend your life around the plan. As part of Arkipel today - that's still JOIN's philosophy and it's the actual engineering challenge for JOIN's Product Engineers: build a system smart enough to react to a missed workout or a bad night's sleep and still make the right call for tomorrow. If that's more interesting to you than another CRUD app, you'll feel at home here.
In this role, you will join Ilja and Marcos to work across backend, infrastructure and mobile/web when needed. A Product Engineer at JOIN is someone who's just as happy debugging an infrastructure fault as they are jumping into the mobile app when the team needs an extra pair of hands.
Designing, building and shipping systems that power JOIN.
Working with our databases and infrastructure to keep things reliable as we scale.
Jumping into mobile or web frontend work when the team needs it.
Owning your work end to end from prototyping to production release.
Using AI tools (including coding agents) to work faster and better: we give you the freedom to use them how you see fit.
Experienced engineer: you're not defined by one language or framework, you figure out what's needed and get on with it.
Full stack with a bias toward backend: You are comfortable across backend and databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL), not afraid of infrastructure (AWS, DigitalOcean, Docker, Terraform); You have some exposure to TypeScript/Node.js, Java or Kotlin, and React/React Native, or native iOS/Android.
You regularly release to production and know what that responsibility looks like.
You work independently, without needing hand-holding.
Uses AI to complement their skills and go further, not to skip understanding of what's being built.
You're early career and need a mentor - this role isn't set up for that.
You only want to work in one specific language or framework.
You lean on AI to generate code without understanding or owning it.
🌍 Remote: Work from any location within the -1/+1 CET time zone range.
🙌 Team gatherings: Company-wide offsites throughout the year.
🏝 Holidays: 25 vacation days, on top of local bank holidays.
🎓 Learning: Annual €1,000 learning budget.
📈 Options: Stock appreciation rights (SAR) plan that kicks in after one year.
🐣 Family friendly: Parent-friendly working environment.
👕 Arkipel gear: Epic swag, obviously.
💰 We are open to hiring an experienced Mid-level or Senior Engineer for this role. We'll discuss salary in our first chat, based on your experience and expectations.
