Medical Research Consultant

Remote

We’re building a new model of collaborative care for people living with chronic conditions. These are private communities that bring together people with similar phenotypes, diagnoses, age, gender, and lifestyles. We’re looking for a physician communicator and researcher who believes it’s time to explore new approaches and recognizes that traditional healthcare often falls short when it comes to preventing chronic diseases and reducing flare-ups.

Who We Are

Welltory is a health-tech company with over 17 million users that helps people take better care of their health through data analysis. We’re consistently ranked among the top 10 health apps in the United States.

We recently launched Welltory Community, an initiative focused on creating private communities of people who share similar chronic conditions, demographics, and overall phenotypes. All participants use our app to collect and analyze their health data.

Within these communities, hosted on Discord, members exchange insights, support one another through lived experience, and help generate research cases that we investigate using their real-world data in collaboration with a medical advisory board.

This is much more than a support group. It’s a research environment where we collect and analyze continuous longitudinal data from well-defined cohorts, identify patterns, and develop research hypotheses together with community members themselves.

In return, participants gain support, meaningful insights, a deeper understanding of their health, and a sense of belonging among people facing similar challenges. A working mother with Long COVID, for example, can connect with and learn from another mother navigating the same condition. Together, the community helps build a unique dataset that combines subjective experiences and objective measurements from people with similar phenotypes and lifestyles.

We believe this represents a new kind of care for people living with chronic conditions.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a physician or a specialist with a background in medicine, physiology, or a related field who will serve as a medical consultant, researcher, and educator within our community.

Research-mindedness, emotional intelligence, and a genuine interest in communicating with people are essential. A good sense of humor is also highly appreciated (medical humor included).

This is not a clinical practice role. A medical license is not required, and the country where you obtained your education does not matter.

The position sits at the intersection of research, education, emotional support, and health data analytics.

What You’ll Do

Research Health Data with AI

You’ll have access to a unique dataset that includes:

  • Daily HRV measurements

  • Activity tracking data

  • Wellness journals

  • Menstrual cycle data

  • Community engagement patterns

All data is stored in a structured data lake.

You’ll work alongside AI assistants such as Claude to analyze data, identify patterns, and generate hypotheses. Programming experience is not required. What matters is your ability to use AI effectively, understand what questions to ask, and clearly articulate what you are looking for.

Lead Clinical Education Within the Community

You’ll help community members interpret their data, create educational content, participate in group case discussions, and collaborate with our medical advisory board.

You’ll be one of the primary people interacting with community members on Discord, carefully reading their messages and responding in the most helpful way possible.

Sometimes this means helping participants understand their data in a medical context—without providing diagnoses or treatment recommendations, but through education and explanation of potential patterns.

Strong scientific communication skills are critical. You should be able to explain complex concepts in clear, accessible language without oversimplifying the underlying science.

At other times, your role will involve providing empathy, encouragement, and human support while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

Publish Research

We aim to produce peer-reviewed publications, including:

  • Case series

  • Observational cohort studies

  • Descriptive research

You will be eligible for co-authorship.

Our research is uniquely positioned thanks to access to longitudinal wearable data combined with self-reported outcomes from cohorts of people with similar phenotypes and lifestyles—an area that remains significantly underrepresented in the scientific literature.

Advise the Product and Research Teams

You’ll help validate analytical approaches, review the medical accuracy of reports and AI-generated content, and contribute to the design of health metrics and research tools.

Facilitate Community Discussions

You’ll help maintain the quality and scientific integrity of discussions within the community.

This includes:

  • Gently guiding conversations in productive directions

  • Evaluating participant-shared information against current scientific evidence

  • Correcting misconceptions and myths with tact and empathy

Your goal is to help members share experiences and insights while preserving an evidence-based foundation for discussion— without dismissing personal experiences and without allowing unsupported claims to spread.

You’ll work closely with a professional community facilitator and a mental health expert.

Each community is supported by its own medical advisory board composed of university professors, practicing physicians, and specialists with expertise relevant to that specific phenotype. They are available for consultation on complex questions and challenging cases.

What Matters to Us

Required

  • Advanced degree in medicine, physiology, sports medicine, rehabilitation, or a related field (MD, PhD, or equivalent; country of education does not matter)

  • Ability to write and publish a paper in a peer-reviewed journal (demonstrated experience or a convincing plan for your first publication)

  • Strong written English

  • Interest in at least several of the following areas:

    • Chronic fatigue

    • Burnout

    • Chronic stress

    • Hypertension

    • Perimenopause

    • Chronic pain

    • Dysautonomia

    • Long COVID

    • Migraine

    • MCAS

    • Irritable bowel syndrome

    • Dysregulation of the body's adaptive systems

  • A strong belief that continuous streams of subjective and objective health data can help prevent disease, reduce flare-ups, and improve quality of life for people with chronic conditions

  • Willingness to use AI tools as part of everyday work

  • Scientific integrity and a solid understanding of statistics and biomarker analysis

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with wearable data (HRV, accelerometry, sleep staging)

  • Familiarity with ME/CFS, Long COVID, PEM, and POTS, at least through scientific literature

  • Experience in health data science, epidemiology, or biostatistics

  • Publications of any kind (peer-reviewed papers, preprints, reviews)

  • Experience in community health, patient education, or telehealth

  • Knowledge of Python, R, or SQL (using AI assistance is perfectly acceptable)

Working Format

  • Fully remote

  • Full-time, with the possibility of transitioning gradually from part-time

  • Compensation based on experience and mutual agreement

  • Flexible working arrangements

  • Guaranteed co-authorship on publications when ICMJE authorship criteria are met

  • A team of exceptionally smart and highly professional people committed to helping others and building genuinely innovative solutions
