Chief Legal Officer (CLO)

CyprusRelocationHybridChief

We are looking for an experienced and proactive Chief Legal Officer (CLO) to lead our Legal function and transform it into a strategic business enabler with C-level authority.

You will build and lead a high-performing Legal team, proactively identify legal risks and regulatory changes, and align compliance with business objectives across all jurisdictions. Reporting directly to the CEO, you will work closely with senior leadership, product, marketing, and player care teams to ensure Legal enables fast, informed decision-making rather than acting as a bottleneck.

What you will be doing

  • Leading and developing the Legal team into a top-performing function that drives company growth through proactive risk identification, regulatory compliance, and strategic business partnership.

  • Providing options-based legal advice (green / grey / black risk levels) rather than blocking initiatives, translating complex legal matters into clear guidance with quantified business impact.

  • Monitoring regulatory developments across key jurisdictions (US, UK, EU) and preparing the business for upcoming changes in player protection, data privacy, content moderation, and age verification.

  • Designing and implementing structured legal processes: request intake and prioritisation frameworks, SLAs, contract management workflows, standardised templates, and a legal metrics dashboard.

  • Owning risk management and compliance across gaming regulations, corporate governance, employment law, intellectual property, data privacy, platform publishing, and player interaction policies.

  • Managing external counsel relationships and legal spend, and representing the company in legal matters with external parties.

Required qualifications

  • Law degree from an accredited and recognised university.

  • Proven track record in an executive legal leadership role (Head of Legal, General Counsel, CLO, or equivalent including “Acting as”), with progressive career development from associate-level to senior legal positions.

  • Extensive experience in game development or interactive entertainment, with MMO gaming experience required — specifically games with player-to-player chat and community interaction.

  • Multi-jurisdiction experience: US, UK, and EU mandatory; Brazil/LATAM beneficial.

  • Expert knowledge across: corporate governance, employment law, IP (trademarks, ad creatives, game code, mechanics, characters), data privacy (GDPR, CCPA), game mechanics regulations (dark patterns, loot boxes), player content moderation (chat, UGC), and minor protection laws (UK Online Safety Act, age verification).

  • Experience leading the full legal function — strategic direction, not just team management — including drafting and improving legal processes, cross-departmental workflows, and team structure.

  • Strong communication skills: ability to influence senior leadership, present ideas persuasively, and make complex legal matters accessible to non-legal stakeholders.

  • Business-oriented mindset: comfortable balancing legal and business considerations, operating in grey zones responsibly, and acting as an enabler. Experience with OKRs or similar goal-setting frameworks.

  • 5+ years of tenure in at least one organisation (7+ preferred); demonstrated career stability.

  • Willingness to relocate to Cyprus to work in our office in Limassol.

Preferred qualifications

  • Direct experience with mobile free-to-play MMO strategy games or closely related genres (PvP with persistent chat communities).

  • Experience in a heavily regulated gaming-adjacent industry (e.g., iGaming) with demonstrated cultural and values alignment.

  • History of building scalable legal processes, policies, and templates in a fast-growing or mid-sized company.

  • Familiarity with UK, EU, Brazilian, and Australian regulatory trends and their impact on gaming, marketing, and age verification.

  • Experience working within the Cypriot corporate and legal environment.

  • Elite academic background.

What we offer

  • A team of professionals with a passion for gamedev and a drive to make Total Battle the #1 MMO 4X strategy game.

  • An excellent remuneration package, including a 13th salary.

  • Full relocation coverage for you and your family to Cyprus (Limassol).

  • A modern, sunny office close to the sea.

  • Private health insurance for you and your family members.

  • A monthly pre-school, school, and university allowance for employees’ children.

  • Lunch compensation.

  • A sports and fitness allowance.

  • Company-funded personal development opportunities (professional and language courses, books, etc.).

  • Bonuses for outstanding results, years of service, marriage, and childbirth.

  • Friendly monthly office parties and epic annual offsite company birthday and Christmas celebrations.
