Engineering Manager, Backend

RelocationRemote

As an Engineering Manager, you will join our Core Backend Team to ensure high delivery quality, efficient processes, and continuous team growth. This role bridges engineering and management, ideal for someone with a strong technical foundation in platform product development.

Responsibilities

Our Core team leads the development of both insurance and non-insurance services within QIC’s ecosystem. On the insurance side, we’re building a robust and scalable core for policy management, claims, and integrations. On the non-insurance side, we’re driving the creation of a lifestyle marketplace — from car care to everyday services — with the ultimate goal of building the backend for a future QIC super app. Across all areas, we focus on user engagement, monetization, and delivering seamless, high-impact experiences.

  • Oversee day-to-day execution across backend sub-teams (Core, Non-Insurance, Platform)

  • Work closely with the Head of Backend to сoordinate development cycles, sprint planning, backlog updates, and delivery milestones

  • Support team leads in managing priorities, removing blockers, and ensuring smooth collaboration between product and engineering

  • Participate in technical reviews and provide input where needed — without being hands-on daily

  • Conduct regular 1-on-1s and development reviews with engineers and team leads

  • Foster growth, mentorship, and healthy engineering culture

  • Improve team rituals — stand-ups, sprint retrospectives, release readiness

  • Act as the key communication bridge between backend, product, QA, and analytics team.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in backend development, including at least 2 years in a lead or managerial role

  • Strong technical background in web and mobile development with understanding of modern frameworks, APIs, and integration patterns

  • Experience in microservices architecture and distributed systems design

  • Ability to make architectural decisions that balance scalability, maintainability, and delivery speed

  • Proven project management skills: planning, prioritization, delivery tracking, cross-team coordination

  • Strong organizational and communication abilities; capacity to structure complex initiatives into clear, actionable steps

  • Experience leading distributed or cross-functional teams and fostering collaboration and ownership

  • Familiarity with Agile practices, sprint planning, and backlog management

  • Background in product or platform development, working closely with product managers and stakeholders

We offer

  • Long-term service agreement contract with QIC

  • We are diverse – our digital nomads work remotely from 25 different countries

  • Payment in US dollars monthly to your bank account using SWIFT

  • Full-time remote, work schedule: 5 days per week, Sunday to Thursday

  • Vacation policy: Qatar Holiday Calendar, 20 workdays of vacation, and 10 sick days

  • Performance reviews are conducted twice a year, with the possibility of a raise in March and September

  • Potential opportunity to apply for a Qatar ID and relocation to Doha, Qatar
